Copywriters were hired on a one-year contract basis. Opportunities for advancement to permanent status without a contract usually did not occur at the one-year mark. Management kept costs low by keeping many workers in a contract status for a long time. There were no benefits as a contract worker. No opportunities for advancement for copywriters.
