Working at NTG as an account manager is hard because you have to overcome three bad situations while working there. An oversaturated industry, a tough role (inside sales), and a terrible company. First, I'll address the industry. There's a lot of money in third-party logistics, so a lot of people want to operate companies — the thousands of firms that operate means fierce competition for clients. When you call potential clients, you might be the tenth person to call them on that day, and they won't be happy to hear from you. It's challenging to sell a basic service like freight delivery, and your ability to win their business is highly dependent on price, which you have no control over. On top of that, logistics is a notoriously crooked business, so expect to be lied to by clients and carriers. Furthermore, the smoothness of the delivery is mostly outside of your control, meaning clients get angry with you for things that aren't your fault. Lastly, due to the nature of freight shipping around the clock, you're always on call to assist your clients, leading to poor work/life balance. Second, the function. Some people handle the pressures of inside sales well but know that it is an unpleasant role to hold. Prepare to nearly harass clients with your frequent calling and asking for their business. Prepare to be treated rudely every day. Prepare to try to sell products to people who don't need them. Prepare to have your livelihood depend on someone else's choice. I hated this role, and the good moments were heavily outweighed by the bad. Lastly, I'll address the company itself. NTG shocked me with how depressing and unprofessional of an environment they created. Loud, blaring music makes it incredibly difficult to hear who you're talking to unless you're in one of the "salesrooms." Attire is casual, contributing to a workplace that feels too much like a frathouse. You receive next to no training on how to sell NTG services, so you better hope you're a natural or you're out of luck. Ethics are nonexistent at NTG. They openly encourage you to lie to clients and carriers if it benefits the company. Additionally, the music played is often sexually explicit, which is unimaginable to me that a company would even consider playing such things in the office. The company is quick to get on your case for even minor offenses. Management wrote me up for a phantom violation, which I found very concerning. Prepare to have your excellent work overlooked, but all your mistakes remembered. I urge you to avoid NTG and other 3PLs. The work is terrible, stressful, and 24/7. If you do want to work for a 3PL, though, do not work for NTG. It's clear that leadership doesn't care about you, and you will always be on edge. You can find other companies that would love to have your talent. Don't waste your time in this soul-crushing place!
