Pros

The job itself; working with students, inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Cons

You are constantly told to do more with less, as budget cuts continue to intensify. The salary is not at all commensurate with experience, nor is it a living wage if you are a single-income household. Flagstaff has a very high cost of living, and the wages offered at this institution do not reflect that. The benefits are great (namely, health insurance and employee tuition reduction). However, expect your take home pay to be around 55% of your wages -- the rest goes to parking permit fees (yes, even faculty and staff are charged for parking), mandatory pension contributions, employee-paid benefits, etc. Having a hostile work environment or a welcoming team setting really depends on who is the chair of your department and what kind of work culture they sustain. I would only recommend working at this institution if you want to live in a beautiful area with plenty of outdoor access and you are willing to be a professional adult who shares a home with other professionals (or if your spouse has a well compensated remote job).
