Pros

They are very good at being deceitful, especially during the recruiting process.

Cons

Too many to list. This job is a total scam and so are most of the people selling their products. I was brought on being told I was going to be able to make enough money to afford my life in a new city easily. Was not told that it’s 90-120 days for even 1 deal to go through and get paid. Training isnt fully even paid for. The pay you get for 1 deal is only like $100. When I asked my managers about how this was going to work out for me money wise I was told that everyone in this role is expected to debt fund their lives for at least the first year because you’re “starting you’re own business” but in fact you are not your own boss at all. You have weekly quotas and meetings you have to attend for the first 3-5 years. I was told to be working about 70-80 hours weekly at this job, basically harassing all my family and friends to be successful. Furthermore, I was completely lied to and deceived throughout the whole process and very very much regret taking this job. I was only there for a couple months because I could tell it was an absolute joke from the beginning. RUN from this job if you want to do anything worth while in the financial industry. I can’t say enough about how horrendous this job is.

Pros

I have been an advisor there for about 10 years, 8 years in the full-time role and 2 years as an intern. I now have full control over my day and I’m about halfway to seven figures of income per year, most of which is residual. I have over 700 clients that are in love with the work that we do and find incredible impact with the solutions we can bring them with comprehensive financial planning solutions. I have been offered lots of money to leave, but I will never believe this or organization, you could offer me a $10 million check to go somewhere else, but I would gladly turn it down. I find so much purpose in what I do.

Cons

This job is not for everyone! You must have thick skin and an incredible work ethic. It requires 10 to 12 hours of work per day for the first few years. After that you will develop a very good balance.

Pros

This internship has allowed me to get real world experience from the very beginning. I've learned how to use LinkedIn Recruiter, make scheduling and screening phone calls, and gotten to shadow the Director of Recruitment during interviews. Compared to other internships that I applied for, Northwestern Mutual has allowed me to have far more exposure to what a real career in recruiting could look like. The office has a great energy and culture, and I am able to participate in fun team events, like going to the Cardinals baseball game. As for career growth, I really admire the emphasis that Northwestern Mutual places on growth and development. Through my time spent around this company, I've been personally and professionally challenged to grow. I've been given books to read, attended leadership meetings, and been given the opportunity to dive deep into my strengths. The management here has encouraged me to explore and shadow different roles to help me make an informed decision about what kind of careers I want to pursue after graduation. Overall, I can't recommend this company enough! They are truly focused on serving their clients well, and developing employees to reach their full potential.

Cons

None, I've had a great experience! This is an environment of growth, so it can require moments of being challenged and stretched to do things outside your comfort zone. I could see some people being uncomfortable with growth, so it's not the environment for everyone! But if you are willing to lean in, it will make such an impact on your life.
