Nulty+ Response
3yAs a global design studio, we try to create a fun, creative and enjoyable culture. All staff are encouraged to take responsibility for their projects. It’s never our intention to micro-manage the team, and we hope that this creates wonderful opportunities for each designer to develop their knowledge, relationships, and ultimately fulfil their individual potential.
We encourage our team to understand more than just lighting design. Everyone is encouraged to develop skills in business development and business administration because we love well-rounded designers who also understand the business of design.
Inevitably, a successful design studio must be creatively and technically excellent, so we have high standards that require exceptional customer service. We believe that the client relations are everything and do whatever we can to meet their expectations. This does mean we sometimes have to work unsocial hours, but we’re not a 9-5 industry.
We’re very proud of the fact that we’re a predominantly female team with a huge diversity of nationalities. And we’re even pet friendly…
In fact, we’re one of the most diverse independent lighting design practices in the industry. Where requested, we’re offering additional management training to assist staff in developing the necessary skills for promotion to management level. But you’re correct, at this stage our management team is not as ethnically diverse as it should be. We’re working on it though.
We also take the wellbeing of our fantastic team very seriously and do what we can to support their needs. We pride ourselves on being ‘family friendly’ and accommodate the needs of parents and carers by allowing flexible working hours. In the UK studio we offer hybrid working, and across every studio we offer all members of the team a ‘half-day’ on a Friday, providing all deadlines and meetings are completed.
We’re absolutely sure we’re not perfect and, at all levels of the business, encourage learning, feedback and open discussion. It’s disappointing to read your comments now because we’d have welcomed the opportunity to discuss them whilst you were employed and would have done whatever we could to address your points.
As we’re a global team of almost 100 people, it’s inevitable that we can’t always meet the requests of every employee. However, we genuinely value and appreciate every single member of our team and take great pride in creating a culture that promotes growth, learning and passion for light.
