Isolating environment for under-represented engineers - Mechanical Engineer Outpost (CA) Employee Review

Pros

Location near Santa Monica pier, good insurance coverage, 401k matching

Cons

Company claims to be about sustainability and talks a lot about diversity, equity, and inclusion, but neither of these messages turned out to be true. The prime goal is money, and greenwashing and DEI talk seemed to be for show. Deep organizational problems with systemic sexism and the owners are big on hiring a "diverse" team without doing anything about the equity and inclusion parts of the equation. Trainings and education on DEI for the entire company were promised and not delivered, and the result is that the people most likely to experience microagressions (women and other underrepresented engineers) will experience them on a daily basis - leading to an ultimate sense of isolation as the standard space engineering men make all of the important decisions.

Pros

Great vision, fast paced startup with the ability to role up you sleeves and take responsibility in the building process of a world changing mission. For those that want the ability to grow in responsibility, experience, and roles.

Cons

Being in the building phase you need to be willing to get your hands dirty, deal with uncertainty, and be willing to fill in the gaps. This is not a company if you want to be just a number, require a comfortable well defined role, or just want a job that is 9 to 5.

Pros

Outpost is building something that has never been built before, so we can't hire people who have that experience. The results? A team of passionate, dedicated collaborators who are all adding their part of the equation to make Earth return a scalable reality. The ownership is real. The openness to experiment is real. You can sense the mission every day. There is genuine excitement in the building and across departments.

Cons

Regular start up growth pains, nothing here that wouldn't exist at any company proving a new technology.
