Pros

Meeting incredible, hardworking people (lower associate level) and being in a likeminded environment.

Cons

-PETA was without a doubt, the most toxic work environment I've ever experienced. The extremely high turnover rate speaks for itself. There is absolutely 0 work/life balance. You are expected to spend what little time you do have outside of work being a PETA staffer and volunteering for the cause. PETA nearly stripped me of an identity outside of being a PETA worker. -Upper management has no clue what they're doing. They're incompetent at managing departments, and are managers because they started at PETA 15 years ago making minimum wage and advanced through job titles. Hopefully you don't end up with a manager that sides with their ex-fiancee over their employee of several years. -So many former staff members leave and come to write reviews on Glassdoor, expressing their honest experiences, because in my opinion, this is vital information for a prospective employee to know. Because of this, management often emails employees coaxing them to write positive reviews to wash out the negative ones. -For a company spearheaded by primarily women, its alarming how much men are favored here. I was once told I needed to smile more in a review. Meanwhile, men are allowed to say "no" to tasks, speak disrespectfully to staff, and management finds it funny or endearing and looks the other way. If you are a female, please watch your back. Male managers and directors often prey on young female interns and employees, and people look the other way and they suffer 0 consequences. -You are taught to live and work in absolute fear of upper management. What they say is final word. -Your talents will be wasted here. You are much better off at another animal welfare organization that will no doubt pay better. Minimum salaries at PETA are starting at $23,000.

Pros

Coworkers are hard working, intelligent, dedicated animal advocates. I truly believed everyone was trying their best for to save the animals from horrific abuse. It was nice to be among people who understood what animals are put through and who were giving their all to help them.

Cons

Challenging work environment with no concern for work/life balance. Low pay for emotionally difficult work. It felt very hierarchical. A lot of questionable practices, such as requiring employees to watch graphic abuse imagery as part of onboarding and begging employees for monthly donations to deduct from their salaries. Some campaign strategies felt unrealistic or lacking in evidence, so it could feel like we were wasting time and resources on projects that were not likely to have much pay off for the animals.
