Pros

With a good academic adviser, you are able to work independently and on topics that excite you with advice and guidance from your adviser. If you get a good adviser, you are able to have a flexible schedule and are not required to show up from 8-5 everyday. Most graduate students will also serve as teaching assistants for various professors. Again, some professors make this an enjoyable experience, others tend to over-use their graduate students.

Cons

Cost of living is high in the area so it's hard to save much from your assistantship and funding is hard to get for certain research projects.

Pros

They were very flexible with hours and it was a fun place to work. There was lots of downtime to do other things while on the clock, and an e-bike to get around campus quickly.

Cons

Toward the end they got pretty strict about keeping your computer on a certain tab to take online tickets, and you could get in trouble for not doing it. It’s tedious work overall.

Pros

flexibility. I'm on a fellowship I won with a great advisor. It is not so good for others.

Cons

An inherently liminal position with severely reduced benefits.
