Pros

Mostly kind, goodhearted low level employees. Hours are reasonable.

Cons

Men and young women will be treated poorly by the "lifers". You will be second class. It's run by older women, and the ageism and sexism is rampant. Management will treat you poorly, and the union is in bed the with management. The library is separate from the rest of pierce county employees, so you will not be given the same protections, rights and benefits as other public employees. Zero room for advancement. People don't retire from this job.

Pros

Library system has decent benefits and somewhat competitive wages. Coworkers who are not burned out are interesting people to work with. Sometimes staff provide resources, help or information that highly impact the life of a patron.

Cons

Abysmal communication from admin and constant changes to service model and procedures. Unpleasant woking conditions at many of the llibrary locations do to low morale, constant change and loss of astronomy at times. All staff float regionally to multiple buildings and some are not fully trained in emergency procedures or relevant local resources. There is little advancement opportunity and staff spend much of their time floating to various work sites to keep the buildings staffed with barley enough people to be open. Some of the library buildings are not taken care of well. Look forward to flooding parking lots, problems with mold, poor HVAC. Some library locations have chronic behavioral issues that must be delt with daily.
