Pros

Large Company, Many other Premform construction sites to go to incase there is a slowdown at current job.

Cons

There is OBVIOUS favoritism there. I am cool with everyone on that site, I've always gotten along with people. There are some who are friends with the boss, who literally get to do practically nothing all day while myself and others did work that was something that should have been done with machine. Imagine, the crane is sitting there doing nothing for 2 hours. We need to carry very heavy things up the staircase for about 2 hours, They barely could fit and up 3 stories. When the Crane could have put a chain around those things and brought them up with just 1 lift, perhaps 2. It makes no sense and then you get injured or pull a muscle for no reason.

Pros

Unionized work (union wage, benefits, pension etc.), good learning and training experience compared to smaller companies that don’t have as detailed of a safety program (having a good safety rep training you is crucial though, especially if you lack construction experience). Fast paced work environment for those who like it, and as stated, gives you a good platform for working in a higher level safety position elsewhere. Not as much physical work involved as a labourer, carpenter etc., but be aware that you are expected to be involved in maintaining safety of the site, which means wearing a tool pouch

Cons

Safety manager has a strong personality and is very rigid and set in her ways, even if she is wrong about something. Difficult to communicate with which usually leads to safety reps going to her second-in-command rather than speaking directly to her. There have been high turnover rates in the past and she is often cited as one of the reasons. Many supervisors don’t treat safety reps and their responsibilities with respect, which creates a stressful work environment, especially for newer reps. They are quick to place blame however when things go wrong (not specifically talking about my experience), though I know this occurs with other companies as well. If you lack time management skills there is a good chance that you will struggle.

Pros

- On the job training - Manageable workloads - Good benefits - Consistent work available (layoffs are not common) - Company does not micromanage (autonomy in your day to day work) - Consistent yearly salary increases

Cons

- Very rare opportunities for growth (advancement is usually tied to tenure rather than contribution) - Overly structured company that stays in their ways of doing things - Lack of company professionalism - Can at times be a hostile work environment - Employees can be difficult to deal with (authoritarian management style) - Traditionalist company (conservative workplace culture)
