Pros
* Incredible loyalty to employees, especially during recession. Layoffs generally don't happen.
* Good vacation, sick time, education & health benefits.
* Most jobs are 25-80% travel with an expense account and company-provided transportation during that time. Salary goes a LOT farther when someone else is paying the bills. Never pay for a vacation again with all the frequent flyer miles.
* Lots of independence. You get tasks and deadlines, little micromanagement.
* Growing company. "Train your replacement so you can move up" is common.
Cons
* Most jobs are 25-80% travel. Sometimes difficult with a family.
* Most jobs are legitimately overtime-exempt salary. DoT regulations mean you can't do anything too crazy, but expect to work long and hard hours in the field during big jobs.
* Usually working by yourself within 2-3 months on easier projects. Sometimes tough to be the person on the spot that fast even if you can call others for help.
