Too much control and zero trus - Anonymous Employee Recess Studios Employee Review

Pros

I worked with some incredibly talented people.

Cons

The problems started with leadership and spread through almost every part of the job. The hours got insane, deadlines kept piling up, and there was never a clear point where enough was actually enough. Small tasks turned into full reviews, simple decisions needed approval, and the amount of control over basic work was just CRAZY. Some managers had this freak need to be involved in everything, which made it hard to trust your own judgment or work independently. Feedback rarely helped, and a lot of conversations left people feeling smaller instead of better. Growth was hard to find, support was limited, and blame moved around faster than solutions. I watched talented people lose confidence, get burned out, and quietly leave one by one.

Pros

Recess Studios has a well curated Instagram page.

Cons

The absolute most dishonest, embarrassing, and toxic environment I have ever been exposed to. Leadership is both incredibly inept and egotistical - you will be asked to cover for their poor decision making, resourcing, and lack of industry knowledge every day of your tenure at Recess. You will be consistently yelled at in front of your coworkers and derided by clients because the work is always behind schedule and of terrible quality. Every project will be significantly understaffed by a rotating crew of unvetted junior freelancers, and led by an account team that would struggle as interns at any real agency. At Recess, the word "process" is used as a weapon against employees and a shield by leadership and account teams. These is no "process," at Recess - the only strict rule is to stroke the fragile egos of the owners while you watch them mistreat employees, fail to pay vendors and freelancers, and provide their clients a subpar, immorally expensive product. Despite the consistent poor quality, overpriced services, and well below-industry-standard wages, Recess is unable to manage their cashflow, which they subsequently blame on their employees. They do not have a finance team, and instead rely on their already overburdened production and project management teams to act as accountants on behalf of the company. Bottom line, DO NOT WORK HERE and DO NOT HIRE RECESS. This company endangers employees, fails to pay vendors and freelancers, and, most simply, doesn't do any good work.
