Pros

- connecting with the students and families, I still talk with some of my kids and I know we'll stay in contact in the future - dedicated fellow tutors

Cons

- zero transparency - management really pushes the idea of growing within the organization when those opportunities just aren't there - lack of consistency across sites, your experience will depend on your placement - there are some good Site Directors but many have little training and don't know how to give feedback/support tutors - management routinely asks for feedback but never follows through or acknowledges that feedback

SAGA is committed to employee retention, not only to promote leadership in our organization, but also to demonstrate that we care about our current employees and want to see them advance in the important work we do. SAGA revamped and standardized the hiring process to ensure all persons truly have an equal opportunity for advancement. All candidates submit applications to the position for which they are applying for, as well as undergo an intensive 3-part interviewing process. This past year, over 30% of our cohort applied to return in various capacities. Between New York and Chicago, we currently have 27 former Fellows who advanced to the following positions: Leadership Fellow, Site Director, Assistant Site Directors, National Director of Data, and Recruitment Manager, and another 17 who came back to be a SAGA Fellow for a second year! Additionally, inconsistencies amongst sites has been improved in two crucial ways: hiring of experienced, licensed educators, as well as creating the positions of Deputy Executive Director both in New York and Chicago adding another layer of support so that Site Directors can spend more time focusing on Fellows’ professional development. As we cannot guarantee a promotion for everyone that applies, we will attempt to secure and provide career opportunities and resources for all Fellows upon completion of their service year.
