Pros

- A very interesting premise for a product that could potentially help in curbing climate change and meet global emissions goals. - Lot's of very bright people working at SPAN that are generous with their knowledge. - A great place for engineers, data scientists and clean energy experts to get into deep and potentially practical solutions.

Cons

- Extremely toxic working environment. Initially, the idea of a company started by Tesla expats seemed intriguing however, they've also brought with them toxic masculinity, berating of employees, over promising, under delivering, and a sense that you must be subservient to be valued and respected. The impact this has on employees is severe. People who are otherwise pragmatic, empathetic, and level headed, quickly adopt poor behavior and accusatory approaches towards direct reports and other teams to please executives. - Products and services over the last year have been announced with fanfare, only to quietly disappear. Videos of these announcements are readily available and continue to be used for recruiting purposes even though both the release dates and products themselves are no longer relevant. - Directors are not hired to lead teams but are seen and treated as individual contributors. The company is not transparent about these expectations and any discussion or attempts to resolve through appropriate resources are meet with derision and bullying. As for individual contributors; they are expected to be on call after hours and on weekends to meet unrealistic, uninformed goals. - Leadership team does not know how to build, structure and motivate a high-performing organization. There have been a long chain of exits from VPs to Directors, as well as individual contributors, who have been forced out for doing little more than the job they were hired for. Sometimes this has been characterized as "Not being the right fit" but has proven to be code for "I don't like being disagreed with". - The "Move fast and break things" mentality is alive and well at SPAN. Unfortunately, this means unrealistic expectations on employees, a product that underperforms and is essentially for wealthy early adopters of clean energy tech, with very specific use cases. - DEI is an absolute joke at SPAN and is seen as a means to check off a few boxes. The lack of a true People/HR leader is glaring, with the Chief of Staff (who has been at the center of a great many of the employee exits) poorly filing this role. Hiring more women and asians is great but, does not inherently make for diversity and diversity of thought is not in their vocabulary. Equity and Inclusion are almost not worth mentioning, as the definition, let alone the execution, is lost on the leadership team. For employees who may have a valid grievance that effects them emotionally and professionally; there is quite literally nowhere to turn to.

Pros

I've been at SPAN for more than 6 years: from the early days of a dozen employees and not a single product installed through to today's growing global team with products installed in every state. To me, SPAN was, and is, a place where you can (and are expected to) make a difference. Whether you're an intern or a VP, come with an open mind to your role expanding or evolving along with the business. It obviously hasn't been a smooth or easy ride: there's been peaks and dips along the way but the vision and impact of what SPAN is doing for electrification and grid management is more apparent day-by-day. The (majority of the!) people I get to work with everyday are extremely capable, motivated and driven by the same values and mission. Certainly the business, the building, the people and product have changed a lot over the years but I see that evolution as an expected part of any startup's growth. SPAN is a place where you are _required_ to have an impact - that's what continues to drive me and I hope that's why you'll apply as well!

Cons

If you want to sit back, coast and earn big tech money for doing nothing of enormous relevance whilst collecting a generous salary, this isn't the place. The hours can be long; the roadmap and priorities can switch without much notice and we have a long way to go in terms of organizational communication efficiency. That's part of the challenge of any growing startup and should not come as a shock anyone applying. What's important is that there's an awareness of the current issues and a plan to address them with key hires, a plan (and people) to revamp the collaborative and supportive culture of the early days and a promising outlook for the future of the technology. Personally - I believe all those things are opportunities and not a reason to work elsewhere.

Pros

SPAN is working on an important problem — modernizing the electrical panel and enabling a more electrified, resilient home. The mission attracts talented people who genuinely care about energy transition and climate impact. The engineering team is strong and highly collaborative, and there is a real sense of ownership across hardware, software, and operations teams. The company moves quickly and employees have opportunities to take on meaningful responsibility and drive outcomes. Leadership is generally transparent about the challenges of scaling a hardware company, and there is strong focus on product quality and customer experience.

Cons

Like many fast-growing hardware startups, priorities can shift quickly as the company balances product development, manufacturing scale, and market demand. This can create some organizational growing pains and occasional process gaps as teams scale. Cross-functional alignment between engineering, operations, and commercial teams sometimes requires additional structure as the company continues to grow.
