Pros

Working for an organization with a positive mission that doesn't feel "corporate". Employees are valued with a focus on blending professional and home life. Executive management is open to new ideas and change. Employee input is encouraged. Fun and inviting culture.

Cons

Working in social services comes with a lower pay grade than you may find in other industries, but the benefits of flexibility and the trust given to employees by executive management to do their jobs outweighs making a little more in a different industry. Being a small company, there isn't a ton of opportunity for advancement in the form of a title, but there is opportunity for growth.

Pros

I didn't think I'd work at the same place for practically my entire career to date, but STAR has met and exceeded all of my goals as an employee and allowed me room to grow professionally. I love the work-life balance! I can meet my personal life obligations and get things done for work. The people are the best, and everyone is so kind, smart and open-minded. I feel like my ideas are acknowledged and often implemented. I just love working at STAR!

Cons

Since a lot of the organization works remotely, it can be harder to not see people in person as often. They do a good job fostering a team environment and activities to build the team, but sometimes it isn't the same as face to face. That said, I LOVE not commuting every day!!

Pros

STAR cares about their employees and offers a true work/life balance. I can attend my kid's functions, adjust my schedule, or just enjoy an afternoon off without hassle. They have fun activities every month for administrative employees with a focus on team building and doing fun things in our community. My friends are always asking "do you even do work there?" because they hear about the fun things we get to do, celebrating co-workers babies/weddings/life goals, mid-day breaks for bingo, kayaking, bowling, the volunteering we do etc. Yes, we do work too ;-) I always feel like I can suggest ideas, and that they are considered and valued. I like the people I work with, and feel comfortable being myself at work. People who succeed here are motivated, smart and compassionate, they care about making a difference in people's lives. If you are willing to work hard, want to be a part of creating something great, and enjoy a great workplace culture, you'll love STAR. If you prefer drama, negativity or just doing the bare minimum, it isn't the place for you.

Cons

Like other social service minded organizations, being a part of doing something important and making a difference can sometimes come at a lower salary than something in the corporate world. They have improved the benefits a lot, with health, dental, LTD, 401k, PTO etc, it helps offset differences in salary. And frankly, the flexibility, great environment and focus on team keeps me happy at work and that is "worth" something to me every day!
