Pros

“Unlimited PTO” but prepared to hear things like “putting in extra time” often. CCO stands alone in the C Suite as a person you’d want to work for.

Cons

The people running the show are a clique of long time pals who have no idea how to lead people or a business. They are condescending and dismissive, often using gaslighting techniques. Not unique to have been let go for “slipping performance” 3 days after “anonymous” surveys where issues with work load, culture, role parameters and pay were mentioned. Not unique to be highlighted as star team member of the month in the over scheduled all hands meetings and let go that month. Not unique to be given a “promotion” (with a 1.5% raise, zero training, and a one page PDF of random new responsibilities) and be let go that same quarter. You’ll find an immense amount of turnover to the employee base, outside of a few favorites who were there in the beginning.

Pros

I know the recent string of reviews paint a bad picture, but keep in mind the company executed layoffs so what should we expect to see here? I was laid off in 2024 and never left a review, but after seeing the recent feedback I felt like it was time to provide a cooled-off perspective. Overall, my experience while with SMS (for a few years) was very positive. I've worked a few other places and can say confidently that SMS made a real effort to prioritize employee well-being. The weirdest thing about these recent reviews is that while actually employed here, I rarely heard people complain about the employee experience. A few things of note that I liked: - Unlimited PTO (it's legitimate and probably even overused) - Peer-to-peer rewards system - Certification bonuses - Remote work (they gave out remote work stipends)

Cons

- Performance. The company just hasn't performed in a long time so obviously business is suffering. - Accountability. Too many team members abused remote work and it was frustrating to have some people contribute significantly more to performance than others. - Leadership team. The CEO was just about never heard from and this always felt weird to me, especially as business was struggling. Makes it hard to truly trust what they're doing at all times.
