Pros
Some of the best moments working for the company included having a department head who knew his job well. When he was in, workers were treated fairly, able to take time off when needed, able to come to him for questions of performance and advice, and even have the correct schedule based on availability. When an employee needed to be reprimanded they were, but not in an overbearing and uncaring way. Remember, that's when you have a decent manager.
Cons
For whatever reason, decent managers are moved often and don't remain in stores very long. If a department manager is transferred, good luck in the x amount of months it takes to get a new one. Personal experience has implied to me that the company throws a dart to hire managers based on a list of full timers. Get the wrong manager and expect to be overly stressed, worked, have no communication and your world flipped upside down. Expect to be yelled at for "poor performance" including medical leave. Don't bother complaining to a store manager if she or he is a person often negatively gossiped about-there's a reason for it. Oh and don't forget gossip can also determine what kind of employee you are so watch your back.
