Pros

I joined Summer from a much larger organization, and the change of pace to startup life has been exciting and refreshing! The team is made up of driven, smart, and just really darn nice people. We are all here to help borrowers, who have often previously been taken advantage of by unethical loan servicers, and that desire to help others really shines through in the team’s culture. Perks include lunch and learns where we bring in seasoned industry experts to share their knowledge with us, weekly team all-hands where the entire company gathers for updates and to recognize coworkers’ accomplishments, an amazing office building with events shared with dozens of other successful startups, and quarterly team dinners/outings. As a young and fast-growing company we’re still working on streamlining our processes, especially as we continue to add more team members. This can lead to ambiguity, but also opportunity and freedom for each individual to dive in and create change.

Cons

In terms of benefits, we have a 401k with employer matching, which is great! I would love to see a more generous parental leave policy, since this is generally one area where larger companies beat out smaller ones, and it would give Summer a truly stellar benefits package.

Pros

During many of my past internships, my main work has just been helping my manager with simpler tasks, as many interns do. Although I've learned a lot through those experiences, at Summer I've been given much more responsibility and control over the work that I do. I've been able to come up with my own ideas, work towards them, and see them actually implemented, which is really motivating! And my manager is always there to help me through my work. I feel like I have already made in impact in my short time here!

Cons

Since Summer is a early start up with less than 30 people currently, there are some structural aspects such as workflow or processes that aren't in place yet. Some people who are looking for more structure and rules may see this as a con. But others may view this as an opportunity to make real change while working here.
