Pros
- Coworkers will literally take a punch to the face for you - the direct care staff are lovely and the only reason people aren't fleeing in droves - Successful interventions and outcomes with clients can be very rewarding - sometimes you get paid to go the beach and do other fun activities
Cons
- frequent assault of staff by clients with minimal organizational response - lack of communication - high rate of burnout among direct care staff without only lip service from the organization about "self-care" within an organizational culture that prevents self-care - outdated facilities that are frequently being damaged by clients with minimal response from maintenance - low pay and hours that aren't conducive to work-life balance - low staff retention and no real rewards for sticking it out - primary and secondary trauma - clinicians stretched too thin to be present in milieu to run groups - etc.
