An awful workplace!! - Laboratory Technician Symbio Laboratories Employee Review

Pros

As a graduate, you could benefit from the large variety of instruments and tests to learn - if you don’t burn out and crumble from the stress. Some of the analytical instruments Symbio acquires is top of the line, however quickly degrades through poor maintenance.

Cons

- Management do not care about their workers at all. They don’t listen to complaints or suggestions, nor do they have any understanding of the unreasonable amount of work that they try to squeeze out of you - The base rate pay is as low as they can possibly provide, with no overtime pay - A complete lack of proper training for staff learning new tests. Staff are expected to learn and teach methods, without being allocated extra time to do so - Very poor management and organisation. Many important tasks are completely overlooked or mismanaged, leading to chaos - Such a high percentage of staff members speak Chinese (some with only very basic English ability), that for staff that can’t speak Chinese it can feel very frustrating and isolating. It was constantly evident that Chinese-speaking staff were highly favoured by management - Cost-saving measures run rampant, with poor quality lab supplies

Pros

Lots of exposure to different tests in the lab. Hands on GC and LC exposure. Friendly laboratory manager but they are very busy and hard to get a hold of.

Cons

Heavy workload Lots of overtime Annualised sallary means you'll be paid for 38 hour plus 2 hours overtime every week even if you work over that (which happened a lot) High turn over Not everyone speaks English well. Expected to attend daily meetings that can go for an hour, but you still have the same work load to do.
