Pros

- Top notch research and facilities - Theoretical freedom (in practice not so much due to the need of filling direct hours) - Motivated colleagues - Flexible environment

Cons

- Lack of collective strategy-leadership. Bottom-up approach that in practice translates as a collection of individual agendas and politics. The one with the loudest voice gets the agenda through. - Because everyone here (including those in position of power) represent their own interest and not TNO´s, there is large mismatch between what TNO preaches and what actually happens on the ground floor. - One of the consequences is the lack of diversity and inclusion. TNO claims to be an international environment, in practise, I have seen people declining to hold a meeting in English (suffering no consequences for this). - Low salaries and poor career prospects, especially for expats who do not speak Dutch

Pros

Very innovative research organization, employees are treated well and interesting projects to work on.

Cons

In some departments it is common to use Dutch, making it difficult to integrate for non-Dutch speakers.

Pros

Deep subject-matter expertise, reasonably good benefits, good work-life balance including flexible hours, no mandatory 9 to 5 presence, good reputation in the Netherlands.

Cons

Somewhat old-fashioned (although this is changing), dependence on government subsidies, not as well-known abroad as, for e.g., Fraunhofer Institute.
