Pros

If you are unemployed, this job is a move upward. Reporters in editorial were helpful, supportive and team players, but many of the best ones have left for other jobs.

Cons

I am 52 years old, and this job was, by far, the worst job of several that I have held. Managing editor knowingly passes false information to both reporters as well as the public. Demoralizing workplace. Managing editor blames reporters for mistakes he has made during editing. He offers criticism to reporters not to improve their performances or the quality of the paper, but because he truly enjoys cutting down others. Most of the feedback is negative, not positive, and impedes, rather than enhances, employee performance. Management lacks vision and creativity. Little room for reporters to learn, grow or advance. Pay is low; no raises. No training is given; rather reporters are chastised after the fact for not knowing information they could not have acquired before employment, such as using the software to schedule photographers. Unfortunately, the best description I have for management is "bullies."
