Pros

TerraCorps attracts intelligent, empathetic, and driven individuals. Working with the service members and the service sites was a big highlight of the job. Compensation and benefits were reasonable.

Cons

I did not feel that TerraCorps lived up to its promises of equity and inclusion. I felt a lot of fear and confusion working in this job. I felt confused about decision-making processes and company finances, and I was unclear about who held the actual power to make various decisions the entire time I worked at this company. It was hard to tell whether decisions were being made based on evidence or facts, but it did not appear as though they were. It did not feel as though leadership or the board of directors were particularly interested in listening when important critical feedback was brought to them by a large percentage of the staff. I didn't get the impression that leadership had much respect for our professionalism or lived experiences if those things were used to critique the status quo or their own leadership, especially from BIPOC staff. And the way that leadership reacted to certain events made me feel afraid on a number of levels, though I cannot say for certain whether this environment of fear was engendered intentionally or accidentally. My emotional health has improved significantly since leaving this company. I would not recommend working for this company unless they can provide evidence to you that they have made some significant changes from the status quo that drove former staff away.

Pros

Good benefits Great entry into non-profit sector Federal Loans are put on hold and accumulating interest is paid off by government Great opportunity for connections, professional development and skill development A lot of flexibility in work hours Training hours allow for plenty of skill development in your field

Cons

Payment is laughable. I get 1050 a month after taxes for full-time work in Massachusetts which is well below the state minimum wage. Many of my coworkers can barely support themselves with 3 jobs and benefits such as SNAP and HIP barely offset the lack of compensation you receive working full-time nonetheless. The only reason I don't have a second or third job is because I live with wealthy parents. I cannot recommend this program for people with little financial support unless you are willing to work a second or third job. Strict hour limit that allows for flexible schedule can also mean working extensive overtime during certain weeks Lacking amount of hours you can dedicate towards professional development (i.e. apply for other jobs, updating resume, etc)

Pros

Good experience depending on your host location.

Cons

The pay is TRASHHHHHH for the about of work and hours you put in. There’s no guarantee that you can get a job at your location after either
