Pros

Office location and some lovely hard working people who want to do a great job. The pay was also competitive.

Cons

It’s hard to know where to begin. I wish I had listened to the reviews before accepting a role here as the emotional trauma and damage I experienced during my time working at River will take a long turn to recover from. Management have no idea how to run an agency and this is evident in the constant hiring and firing of employees with no real explanation. There is zero structure or process in place for people to thrive and so the environment is total chaos. Each day felt like fighting a losing battle to get the smallest piece of work done. No room for autonomy or decision making as the MD and CEO micro manage everyone. They have little to no respect for employees and people are spoken to and treated in an appalling manner, frequently leaving meetings crying. Everyone is terrified to stand up for themselves for the risk of also being fired, which they have witnessed time and time again. The amount of employees management discarded in my team here was crazy, to the point the agency was run mostly by freelancers. I’ve worked in many agencies over the years and never experienced anything like this. My experience was a complete and utter nightmare from start to finish and felt like I was running on survival instinct alone. I don’t want anyone to experience what I went through so please do not accept a job here no matter what promises they make you.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. Firstly, we are pleased that you enjoyed working with our lovely teams, and that the super office location and salary package suited you. It's concerning to read the rest of your comments as your points weren’t raised during the course of your time here so that they could be addressed. We offer plenty of support to our colleagues so it’s a real shame you didn’t speak up to ask for help if you were struggling. It’s not true that people frequently leave meetings crying. But if anyone is in need of support we always look at options to help, such as reviewing workload, training, referral to our Employee Assistance Programme etc The agency has been in operation for almost 30 years and clearly if management had no idea how to run an agency it would have ceased to exist a long time ago! You mention that there’s constant hiring and firing with no explanation – sadly there are times (as within any company) where we have to part ways with people and the circumstances are confidential. Whilst you might feel there’s no explanation, a lot happens behind the scenes before any decisions are made, and this can’t be shared widely. Employee wellbeing is always a priority and we provide leavers with support to help them find a new role. Whilst we have a wonderful pool of freelancers who we love working with, we are certainly not “run mostly by freelancers” as that would not be a sustainable or practical business solution. 22% of our staff have been with us for more than 10 years (in fact we have two colleagues who’ve been here for almost 29 years!) and this really wouldn’t be the case if your description of the agency were true! Of course we take feedback seriously as we know there’s always room for improvement. If there’s anything practical you can suggest we’d be happy to hear from you directly. Wishing you well for the future.

Pros

- Nice people working at River, unfortunately we all hate our jobs

Cons

- Incredibly toxic, worst SLT imaginable. everyone says that the CEO is a women hating bully and it's been witnessed first hand. No one respects her. Managing director is fake and will be kind to anyone's face and seem like she cares.... she doesn't.

Pros

I can't think of a single thing.

Cons

Costs are wildly out across projects as the senior management want to keep them as low as possible so they win some business, with the added complexity of not knowing how to cost anything that isn’t print so you end up trying to deliver projects with no support, no brief and no hope of success. Failure is baked in. It’s never them, it’s always you. Urgency is embedded in everything but it’s not a virtue - it’s leadership in panic. If everything is urgent nothing is important. It’s not in my nature to write something as visceral as this, but it needs saying. No other agency I have ever worked at functions in this way. My advice would be to swerve it at all costs.
