Pros
Enjoyable times with coworkers, often management is kind and understanding. They pay can be good, provided you can pursue further training and the subsequent pay raise.
Cons
Unfortunately, there are far too many negatives associated with this job. For one, upper management has been actively pursuing cost-cutting measure at the disadvantage of staff. An example of this cost-cutting is the frequent redundancies which have been common over the past four years. The pursuit of casual staff has been made to counter the waves of redundancies. Unfortunately for all, casual staff lack the training; knowledge; and support to aid senior staff and customers in the large amount of services and the store provides. This point would be inconsequential to most retailers - The Warehouse, on the other hand, has casual staff making up a majority of the work force. This could be applied to the one store I have experience in (from what I have heard, it isn't) but the sheer stress of the job is dreadful due to: understaffing; verbally abusive customers (again, possibly area dependent); lack of direction and support from management; lack of sufficient training and resources. I often feel unsafe at this job because of the threats and verbal abuse by customers towards myself and other staff members. Worst of all, I feel the abuse from customers is the least of my worst experiences. I dread going into this work place every day I am rostered - I loathe my time there and I think more importantly, everyone else does too. For those looking for part-time or casual work I would recommend purely because of the opportunities for future employment and pay increases (high turnover rate). For those looking for full-time permanent roles: nothing will kill you faster than stress, and in no other place is this quite as evident here.
