Pros
I had a wonderfully fun and fulfilling time at tlc. I am tempted to go back!
I was in charge of the ceramics elective. Whilst it did get a little repetitive towards the end I really did enjoy helping the kids, they were always very into it and I had regulars (mostly ages 7 to 11). Ceramics is a popular elective so be prepared to not have many quiet periods! You’ll also be in charge of the kiln firings so it will certainly keep you busy! I had never used a kiln before but learnt it at this job. It’s was quite simple really! In the evenings, mornings and meal times you are like a general counsellor. You get paid to have fun with the kids and keep them tidy, organised and on track. Evening activities are great and don’t feel like work at all a fair amount of the time!
I met some of the best people; a lot of the other specialist counsellors were international in my summer. A lot of us were interested in travel (hence why we were at summer camp!) so we ended up travelling together after camp. We had great day trips together on days off, hiking and exploring the local towns.
Cons
You’re always doing something! You will have fun whilst working, however, the only time I had to myself was the after dinner period we had off, and the mornings I woke up before the kids. It was a lot but it was just about manageable for me!
There’s not a whole lot to do in the surrounding area on days off. But it is lovely for hiking and chilling by creeks (just a few small towns). I’m not much of a big city person though so I like this.
