Dear Anonymous,
We always appreciate feedback but must admit we are a little puzzled by the timing of this review; we haven’t had an intern – let alone 4 – in almost a year. We have good relationships with our last crop of official interns – there was one intern who quit after one day so hardly fair to use that experience as a benchmark. What’s more, we know several of our previous interns have gone on to full-time jobs. In each instance we provided positive letters of recommendation or acted as a positive reference while employment screening was taking place.
All that said, we don’t view interns or internships as an opportunity to exploit free labor. Admittedly we expect some hustle and sweat equity out of our interns because, we feel, that is the best way to learn. We realize this is not for everyone and we understand the small stipend we offer is not as much as some would hope for. Speaking on behalf of every member of the TM office, I can assert that we have always valued interns and we have always enjoyed assisting in ‘on the job’ learning. In recent years no intern has outwardly voiced displeasure however, we would be happy to discuss further offline.
