      As an enlisted programmer I have a pretty close to gauranteed job even if there isn't much work.

      Cons

      You may not always be doing the job you signed up for. Of course this is not true if you are a govt. contractor or Civil Service employee

      Travel is required (deployments) and you'll have to leave your family.
