Decent benefits but a lot of bureaucracy and dysfunction - Senior Software Engineer Unum Employee Review

Pros

The workers are great. You won't find a harder working, more dedicated group of people. Compensation for IT workers is competitive but not great.

Cons

IT is on its third or fourth "transformation" attempt. Unfortunately what never seems to transform is the management. It's not for lack of trying. Each new CIO has taken a slash and burn approach to the management only to replace the old guard with people cut from the same cloth. There are a handful of people in management that genuinely want to see change but they are far outnumbered by an army of micromanagers, sycophants and megalomaniacs that seems to outnumber the workers. Despite roughly a decade of paying lip service to lean and agile methodologies Unum's IT organization remains very much a top down command and control hierarchy where sticking to a year old plan is rewarded and adapting to market changes means piling more work onto teams that are already stretched too thin. There is also a strong culture of fear and blame rather than one of experimentation and entrepreneurialism. And in a country where Indian immigrants make up maybe 2% of the population Unum's IT is hilariously overrepresented by Indians. Nearly half of management is Indian. And when the hiring manager is Indian it's extremely common for the only applicants to make it to the interview stage to be Indians. In fact there are a number of teams that don't have even a single non-indian person on the team. I'm all for inclusion and diversity but a monoculture is anything but diverse. The rest of the company seems to view IT somewhere between a necessary evil that diverts resources from other business areas or an impediment to running the business rather than a core competency and the lifeblood of the organization.

Pros

Strong work-life balance, supportive leadership, and a collaborative culture that feels more people-focused than many large corporations. Hybrid flexibility, solid benefits, and long-term stability make it a great place to build a career. There are also good opportunities for internal growth and cross-functional experience.

Cons

Decision-making can sometimes move slowly due to layers of process and approvals. Compensation may not always be as competitive as larger tech-focused companies, and organizational changes or transformation initiatives can occasionally create ambiguity or shifting priorities. Like many large enterprises, bureaucracy can at times impact speed and innovation.
