Pros

This is a pretty good place to learn if you're willing to put in the effort, totally fine if you're not, but be aware that just because you put in the time and effort doesn't mean you'll be rewarded for it. Why is this a good place to learn? The product is fine, I guess, if you have strong feelings software catered to consumer packaged goods companies! I'd suggest reevaluating your life choices if you do, but that's just me. But the main reason is that there's a lot of employee turnover without replacement for said employees. This means that extra responsibilities get thrown your way (without a pay raise or promotion), so if you're inexperienced this is actually a really good avenue for learning new things! Now, why is there a lot of employee turnover? Read in the next section! Might be worth mentioning that even though it's a good opportunity to learn, this is still a tiny company that no one knows about so when interviewing for new jobs it's not helpful. Plus, CPG information is not helpful unless you're looking to stay in the industry.

Cons

The more you interact with the CEO, the worse your time at UpClear will be. If you can manage to avoid them, then maybe it can be considered bearable. You're asked to go into the office 3-4 days a week and the atmosphere is... something. Nearly every morning, you will be serenaded with the sounds of the CEO (and sometimes one of the product managers) berating the Paris team in French. C'est la vie! Then comes lunch, which honestly isn't bad! Your co-workers are generally extremely chill and easy to talk to. After lunch is the afternoon, a time that you'd hope is filled with peace and potentially silence. Au contraire, mon ami! There's, you guessed it: more berating, but this time it's in English! Why is there so much berating? The CEO has a massive control issue and poor emotional regulation and this is exceedingly clear when you realize that he is still dealing with day-to-day operational issues at the company. Instead of doing what a CEO should do, which is prioritizing the long-term vision and goals of this company, he's stuck fixating and micromanaging inconsequential tasks. If you're interviewing, try and connect with someone that isn't so senior at the company and just ask them what working at Upclear is actually like. Finally, here are a few roles at UpClear you should definitely avoid no matter how junior you are: 1. Product team is essentially the CEO's punching bag and you will be dealing with him on a day-to-day basis 2. Marketing team is run by a very two-faced senior employee (Kurt) 3. Delivery is where people who are on H1B1 visas get sequestered to and judging from my interactions with them, they're completely and utterly trapped. It's the worst job at the company because part of the reason UpClear actually sells well is because the delivery is "free", this makes the delivery team the punching bag of the clients and upper management.

Pros

Most coworkers are nice overall

Cons

I need to be upfront about what you're walking into. This place will mess with your head and your confidence in ways you probably haven't experienced in a professional setting. The CEO runs this company through fear and intimidation. He'll scream across the office where everyone can hear, or completely ignore you when you try to communicate. Either way, you'll feel like garbage. Don't expect a normal conversation about how to improve - that's not happening. Instead, you'll hear through others what he's saying about you behind your back. You'll constantly be told he has "no time" for you or whatever you need to discuss, yet he'll spend plenty of time publicly humiliating people. The irony? This guy who can barely manage a basic conversation will tell you straight-faced that he's a better manager than you and knows exactly how to lead people. The delusion is real. You'll be walking on eggshells constantly, trying to read his mind because he changes direction without warning. Projects you've been working on for months? Gone overnight with zero explanation, just anger if you ask questions. The hours? Leave at 5pm and you'll be labeled as not committed. But here's the catch - people are already burned out and have stopped caring because why should they sacrifice everything for someone who treats them like dirt? You'll get criticized no matter what you do. Take initiative? You're not busy enough since you have time for "extra" work. Don't take initiative? You're not being proactive enough. It's designed to make you feel like you can never win, and that's the point - it's pure gaslighting. This isn't just a tough job - it's psychological warfare. You'll spend your days in a state of fear and disrespect that will follow you home. The depression is real, and it's widespread. Look around the office and you'll see maybe a handful of people who haven't been completely broken down mentally. Everyone else is just surviving. He'll trash talk you within earshot of your coworkers like you're not even human. The whole place runs on fear and it shows. He believes he is never wrong and never questions himself. Bottom line: This job will damage you mentally and emotionally. Unless you're truly desperate and have no other options, please keep looking. You deserve way better than this toxic nightmare.
