Pros

The location is great and the coworkers were amazing. Because it was a small firm, it was easy to get certain things done (like getting a check cut for a vendor, etc).

Cons

Work-life balance is not well-supported. Extensive micro-managing. Policies can change at the whim of the owner at any time. High stress. It was hard to get rid of non-performing subs. There was a general lack of trust. Employees got thrown under the bus if mistakes happened, whether or not they performed the mistake.

Pros

The people were a highlight of my time at the company. Peers and managers are all stellar and really care about the work. I appreciated and took advantage of the ample runway given for professional growth: in my experience, my managers were excited to give me the space to take on more responsibility and professional development was supported. There is also opportunity to become a key point of contact externally if you have consultant polish.

Cons

Diversity of work was an area of growth and improvement at the time I left. I was able to work on a variety of high-profile/differentiated policy and entitlement projects, but you have to advocate for yourself and have a good track record to get there. Bottlenecks at the point of Principal review were also a challenge.

Pros

Firm gets cool work due to limited local consulting field

Cons

Crossing of personal and professional boundaries. No HR department so nowhere to turn for mediation of issues or unprofessionalism of management. Unprofessional is putting it lightly.
