Pros
Hands down the best place I've ever worked. Companies always like to say that they are "like a family", but it just feels different here. I could probably ask 50+ people if I could crash on their couch TONIGHT - and they would let me without hesitation. Using this as a litmus test helps me understand what it means to be treated "like a family" and not just have that as a slogan. I know that I'm valued beyond my work. As far as work environment goes, VTV is always providing food and events and treats to us. Seems like we always have something that is catered or a fun event to attend with the family. I'm provided with incredibly flexibility and have been given the freedom to perform my duties however I need to. The values (Caring, Committed, Excellence, Egalitarian, Fun) are actually lived out. Just like with companies saying they are "like a family", the values are usually just words on a wall and never actually acted upon. But it's different at VTV. Caring - my department got me a house warming gift when we moved, and my boss delivered food to my door when we had a newborn Committed - I've never felt alone, but rather know that leadership and teammates are on my side. Excellence - The medical excellence in opthalmology speaks for itself. As for as Excellence in working here, though, I'm encouraged and empowered to be the most that I can be. The only thing that stops me from improving is myself - there's no corporate red tape or glass ceilings that keep me from improving my value as a professional. Egalitarian - I always thought this one was kinda weird but but it plays out in a few ways. C-suite leaders park where everyone else parks, as do the surgeons and the owners (I.e. they don't get special parking spots or reserved areas). Plus, I feel like my boss and I are on the same level. They are, of course, my boss, but I still feel like they are more of a "coworker" and will help me with anything I need and never talks down to me. Fun - this is the easiest one to see. We get food trucks, parties, burritos, coffee, vending machines, ice cream, water bars, appreciation gifts, oh my! The Christmas Party alone is more fun in one night than most companies have in an entire year - and that's just one night in December!
Cons
I still don't think there's many places that are better to work at than Vance Thompson Vision. That being said - it's not perfect here. Biggest reasons: Pay - Speaking for myself, I feel underpaid given my responsibilities, skillset, and market value. Benefits - Health insurance is so expensive and I feel like I'd be better off shopping the marketplace (and indeed I might have to), PTO is average, no parental leave, no sick leave.
