Gone down hill - Crew Leader Walker Basin Conservancy Employee Review

The work is dynanmic, engaging, and there are constant opportunities to learn new skills and trades. Leadership staff and management are extremely supportive, and the company has structured opportunities for growth and advancement for all staff, including those who joined the team with no background in conservation. The company as a whole is extremely receptive to feedback based on my experience. I always felt like I was heard whenever I brought up something, whether it be an idea I had to make something in the field work better, or larger feedback focused on improving the company as a whole. A safe place to make mistakes. I know I made plenty during my time there, and can attest that management and my supervisors are supportive, never hostile, and work with you to learn and make improvements as needed.

The pay was less than ideal during my time. However I know this has been addressed and revised after I left in 2022. The company started a DEI committee during my time there, and while I saw extremely encouraging progress in the right direction, lack of diversity is a big issue in the field of conservation in general and there is room for improvement at WBC as well.

WBC gives great opportunity to learn skills that interest you that may not be in your job description. The work is meaningful albeit hard and tedious. Great opportunity to create wildlife habitat. New trails work program has just been implemented. Four day work weeks and three day weekends. Crew leads are wonderful, special shout out to Robert Biggs, without whom I would not have gained the much needed new technical skills and confidence to lead. Lifelong friendships are made here. Great opportunity to explore the American west and close enough to state and national parks to spend a weekend.

Company housing is affordable but has hidden costs. Lack of air conditioning (in the desert) is a problem. The mice infestation must have been the worst I’ve ever seen or heard of. They are not afraid. Management made some steps to eradicate the vermin but not enough. Living with multiple people can be both exciting and exhausting but the rooms were filled to the brim. Unfortunately upper management didn’t seem to take our complaints seriously. If you can live off site that would be my recommendation.
