Pros

- they do cover your health insurance in your pay - they do throw a pretty cool Christmas party

Cons

The company runs on a database that was developed by the CEO in the 90s and hasn’t been updated since. It is unstable and was never designed to handle the workload it now has to manage - but the if it ain’t broke don’t fix it applies so it’s never worked on. It crashes frequently, makes the simplest tasks incredibly slow and inefficient. If you have an idea that can fix the system it’s either shot down or added to the IT list and you won’t see it for a year - more on this below. There is no overtime pay and bonuses are given out incredibly sporadically while having unclear criteria on how to attain. You have to be super friendly with management so that they select you. Office politics here are insane. Office politics lead to an incredibly toxic work environment. You can report “errors” by other employees which leads to ganging up and targeting. Instead of learning from mistakes it becomes a competition of who can get the least errors for the most minor things. The IT department here is one of the most useless things about this place. They seemingly get paid to twiddle their thumbs while everything breaks leading to inefficient operations. Instead of implementing ideas that improve operations they focus on busywork from management and stalking the employees. They genuinely spend more time tracking employees and if they’re “working fast enough” instead of fixing real issues. This company is so far in trouble that HR turned the AC off in the summer, letting it become 80° in the office. It became a battle over the thermostat because “our electric bill was too high”. So much for a company that cares about the wellbeing of their employees….

Pros

There is a great sense of team work and camaraderie amongst those who work here, and it makes the days very enjoyable. Each individual has a passion for Meteorology, and wants to use that passion to help others make informed decisions about their operations as it pertains to weather. Management wants to see individuals be successful, and gives them the tools they need to be successful. There are opportunities to move up within, and suggestions to help make the company better are always welcomed and listened to. You also learn so much about weather patterns around the world, which is as good as it gets. The company is located in the Capital Region of Upstate New York, which is a fantastic place to live, work, play, and raise a family. You are never far from many activities to do, or the peace and quiet of the Adirondacks, if that is what you prefer. It is also conveniently located 3 hours north of New York City, 3 hours west of Boston, and 3 hours south of Montreal.

Cons

Rotating shift work and working on holiday's are both realities in the field of Meteorology, and this is not unique to Weather Routing (or any other private sector company, or the NWS, etc). However, the company is flexible and does their best to accommodate any scheduling conflicts you may have, and also allows you to have either Thanksgiving or Christmas off each year (and you will rotate between the two holidays). On the busiest of days, especially during tropical seasons, the workload can be higher, but the team work makes the dream work, and management makes sure that individuals are known of a job well done.

Pros

None that are worth mentioning as many of the cons outweigh the pros.

Cons

This place is a prison, run. Management is an absolute joke, you can preach your concerns and suggestions to them until you’re blue in the face and no one will listen to you. Raises and bonuses are given seemingly based upon favoritism, with no actual set of evaluations or scale used which leaves many hard workers confused and frustrated. They say you are compensated for overtime hours with annual bonuses, but bonuses have now become less frequent with the long and mentally taxing overtime hours still expected amongst all. It is emotionally and mentally exhausting to be employed here. There are few people in upper management who will actually hear your concerns, but most spoken concerns are dismissed at the director level never reach the president of the company, therefore many things remain unchanged. It appears as tho much of this company was built on favoritism and who will drink the juice of those who run it, anyone who voices a difference of opinion or feels discouraged by the workplace are repeatedly dismissed or reprimanded by not receiving bonuses/raises.

Good Day. I am the president of the company. So, if you feel that your concerns are not being addressed, you are more than welcome to bring them to me directly. With respect to the favoritism, while I am sorry you perceive it this way, I can assure you that any review/promotions/raises and/or bonuses are done thru a process that is seen by up to 8-10 different people, depending on the division. All Managers comment and provide feedback on performance, then the directors then take that and investigate and provide their feedback until it finally gets submitted to myself. It is all performance-driven based. Please do not diminish/minimize the performance of others with the accusation of favoritism, they deserve more credit/respect than that. As far as being reprimanded for difference of opinion, that is a very strong statement, and I again, encourage this individual to see me directly on why they believe it is so. Maybe I am missing something, but it wont get solved on a post, but rather in a meeting face to face. Thanks.
