Pros
Wilder’s community mission. I valued the opportunity to work directly with families and design projects that addressed real community needs. A few colleagues were deeply committed to equity and public service, which made the work itself rewarding despite the environment.
Cons
Professional growth is extremely limited. Advancement often depends more on favoritism than merit or performance, and internal mobility is rare particularly for black staff. Toxic leadership practices are normalized, including retaliatory behavior toward those who raise legitimate workplace or HR concerns. Constructive feedback is often dismissed as “negative,” and psychological safety is minimal. Despite the organization’s stated commitment to equity, internal culture often contradicts its public values. Many talented employees leave because they see no path forward or fear retaliation for speaking up.
