Pros
Students are hardworking and inquisitive
Cons
The departmental culture is deeply toxic, marked by academic erasure, hazing, and constant power struggles. Senior faculty often behave unprofessionally, driven not by vision but by fear—of being challenged, outshined, or made irrelevant. Expect intense micromanagement, invasive oversight of your words and actions, and shifting timelines with last-minute demands. Everyone appears overworked, underpaid, and chronically anxious—but no one can explain why. Attempts to foster kindness, collaboration, or joy are often met with hostility. Though the department may claim to value research and innovation, in reality, faculty are denied meaningful opportunities, support, or promised funding. Dehumanization is normalized. They tend to hire those who are desperate—and treat them accordingly. This is a textbook example of the worst kind of academic environment: hierarchical, fear-based, and resistant to growth. Proceed with caution.
