Pros

I learned a management lesson: if you treat people like naughty children, even the most skilled employee becomes useless.

Cons

I joined in a junior role, with the expectation that I would be given at least my managers support in learning the role and developing my skills. For about a month the pretence was kept up... In reality, senior management did not invest at all in staff and my line manager was a vicious bully who ruled his department like a tin pot dictator. I should have left after a year, but by then my confidence was so low I could not imagine ever being offered another job. The majority of my co-workers were incredibly depressed and staff were frequently off sick with flimsy excuses because they just could not face another day of bullying, threats of being fired, micromanagement to the 15 minutes, humiliation and personal insults. The tipping point came when someone else complained about how my manager treated me and the company made zero effort to intervene beyond telling him the details of the complaint, which led to further bullying. 6 months into a new job and I still have a completely irrational fear of being fired for no reason and have actual nightmares about being back there. The only word for the company culture is TOXIC.

Pros

Close to Chelmsford City Center. You can wear jeans on a Friday!

Cons

Without doubt the worst place I ever worked in a career spanning 30 years. In a typical meeting, a cluster of middle-managers would cram into a dingy room for a pre-meeting to discuss the "narrative" that would be presented to the executive board. Planning meetings would include ridiculous line entries for "1% of xxx's time" - data that had to be entered into the 2 (or was it 3?) applications in the desperate hope that it would all somehow add up to a plan. There was a clear schism between the employees who has been there a while and for whom Eurobase had been their only job, and employees coming in with more modern skills and attitudes both cultural and professional. As has been mentioned elsewhere, the company pays lip-service to being an "investor in people" company but should tear down those plaques (they were already out of date when I was there) - there's no investment in training, infrastructure or morale. The software product that the company produces reflects the company itself - it looks like it died in the 90s. In more than one meeting I heard "don't mention agile software development in-front of the board!" followed by a genuinely shrill laugh. Best way I can sum up the experience - if you've seen any of The League of Gentlemen, then imagine that, only with the humour removed and constrained to a cramped, grimy office in Chelmsford.
