An interesting but troubled place to work

Pros

The E-N is a very interesting place to work. A lot of things have to work together in order to get a newspaper out every day. From sales, news gathering through production, printing and distribution, it all goes on in one building. There are a lot of people that really care about their jobs, despite the hardships.

Cons

The newspaper industry is under a lot of stress from declining ad revenue, which makes everything difficult, but Hearst (corporate parent) has shown very little ability to actually adapt the business to the digital age or think past the end of the next budget period at what might be valuable in the future. Employees are never rewarded for success, only blamed for failure. Every year Hearst reports record profits, but there hasn't been a dime for raises in the last 10 years, only excuses about how times are tough.

Pros

There are still opportunities to write good, important stories. Occasionally.

Cons

Most of the time of reporters and editors is spent feeding the premium website that has no readers. Management has bled the print product dry and now it's a pathetic shell of its former self. No raises in 8 years, only more work spread out among fewer people. Our top editors are good journalists but they're not leaders and they tolerate too much micromanaging by mid-level editors. This paper is a great place for a young journalist to stay for a couple of years and get great experience, but it's not a place to make a career. More experienced journalists can either let themselves be taken advantage of or find someplace that treats employees with respect and pays them decently.
