I have been working at First Student full-time

    Pros

I get time off when my kids are off from school. The management usually tries to work with you when you need to take time off for doctor appointments, personal or family sickness.

    Cons

Where insurance is offered, at least as an attendant, you will use up most of your earnings, there is no paid leave, and like any other job working with children (who many say are our most precious resource, yet talk is cheap) the attendants, drivers, and crossing guards are under paid and under appreciated for the responsibilities they must bear.

    Advice to Management

Ask School Board members, superintendents, parents, and other tax-payers to ride on the bus and see what we do. If that is not feasible, show eye opening videos depicting the work and challenges we face.

  6. "Friendly employees, very under staffed/funded"

I have been working at First Student part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Like most school bus operations, they will train you to get your CDL in about a month. You will earn near minimum wage during training and they pay your DMV fees. Training staff is often pulled from Belvidere, and seems first rate. There are a couple trainers in Rockton who are just terrible, and this is from a certified trainer’s perspective.
Most of the routes have well behaved students, and most coworkers are nice, so it’s not a bad place to work for a part time/split shift job.

    Cons

The Rockton, IL location operates as a satellite branch of the much larger Belvidere, IL First Student bus operation. The Rockton location handles bus transport for all public schools in Roscoe, Rockton, Shirland, and South Beloit, as well as for hire charter trips.
The great majority of folks here are extremely pleasant. It is very much a shoe string operation, always undermanned and underfunded. The building and outdoor bus lot really shows its age and lack if upkeep. Office employees (all employees have their CDL) frequently are pulled off their desk to drive unfilled routes. Pay is just $13.00/hour (20 hour min week guaranteed) and it seems they have a rough time keeping staff.

    Advice to Management

    Properly fund this location.

I worked at First Student part-time

    Pros

If you have kids you go in and get out the same time

    Cons

    No benefits
    Very stressful
when school is closed due to weather no pay

I have been working at First Student full-time

    Pros

    You get trained for free

    Cons

No communication, completely missleading for me.

    Advice to Management

If bringing in people that are rwady to work and give there all to your facility, it should not be misleading. I came im for an interview got excepted, was told my classes would take 4 to 6 weeks..i was working as an Customer Service Rep answering phones. Being that driving a bus was something im really interested in, i quit my job. Only to be called in 2 hours before they wanted me in me to come in and train, but i was not home and got no calls on no other number i gave to Yanique. When i called back maybe an hour later i was told she had called someone else...WOW that was a slap in the face and evwr since I've been getting the run around about why i haven't bewn brought in for training. It has now been almost 2 months..I am done trying with this company after how i have been treated. Will never apply again.

I worked at First Student part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy money, split shift is helpful sometimes, stay long and you will get the good routes that make good money

    Cons

    Waking up super early
    Needs better management
Other co drivers can be rude and the mechanics barely do anything to the busses

    Advice to Management

Actually visit and check and listen in on what your location managers are doing. Ask the drivers how they are doing. Start polls and listen to what people have to say
