Good Individuals, Bad as a Whole

Pros

Benefits are great including, but not limited to: awesome health insurance; decent pay (for a nonprofit); free food or events; one free UMass course per semester. Co-workers are quirky and fun to connect with, especially support/hourly staff.

Cons

A highly negative culture, coming from internal (Executive Director, senior managers) and external leadership (Board of Directors, Provosts, etc.), that creates a rigid hierarchical system. It is a nonprofit in name only—it actually works as an inefficient higher educational institution. There are few options for advancement. There is almost no room for creativity or flexibility. This leads to unhappiness and resentment within their support/hourly staff and a high turnover rate. IT folks should particularly be wary.

Pros

Great mission, interesting people both internal and external, good benefits

Cons

Because the org does so many different things, departments can feel a bit siloed
