Complete lack of communication from upper management

Pros

Flexibility for PMs to work from home is nice, this is appreciated when it's necessary to be on email 14-20 hours/day for those critical projects that can't wait 8-10 hours for a response.

Cons

Above mentioned flexibility rarely, if ever occurs. Upper management takes a "yell and berate" approach to the smallest of details, any kind of post-mortem analysis or requests for changes are ignored in favor of breaking the offending employee down. Little to no mentoring exists, there are no opportunities for advancement. Employees at all levels are not paid consummate to their skills or experience. Highly inappropriate things are said about employees performances by management to other employees. A real "do as I say not as I do" attitude is displayed by management to employees regarding schedules in the office and working at home - fine for the upper management to work from home or come in late and leave early, bad for anyone else to do the same. Taking a sick day, even to see a doctor, is met with suspicion from management. Executive management is either blind to the problems with their upper management or chooses not to see the problems. Meetings are never planned out, run long, run off track, or are an excuse for a manager to sigh about how their problems are much worse than yours. Laughable quarterly meetings run for several days, are completely unorganized and often include people who don't need to be there listening to others pontificate on what could easily have been edited into a 30 minute to hour presentation. Work is still needed to be completed on time and before the end of the day, otherwise there is a yelling involved. Quarterly reviews tell all employees that 100% meeting expectations is borderline being let go for not overperforming at 120%. Then they are told that 120% is unreachable. It's a lose-lose situation. Contractors are paid late, sometimes more than a YEAR late. It's disgraceful that this hasn't been solved.

Lovely place - great team

Pros

Working at Glyph was a very good experience for me: as a fully remote employee, I was very pleasantly surprised by the strong relationships I built with the rest of the project management team. There are no weak links in this company; the leadership is strong, things are moving in the right direction, the head of HR is a really compassionate guy (how rare is that?!), the senior team are seriously impressive, and the work is varied and interesting. It's a pretty small company but they will do their best to accommodate you in terms of benefits: the benefits are great considering the company's size. Most importantly, any PM who starts there will be able to hit the ground running, as they have a very effective, simple and well-established system of tracking and managing all their projects. I would strongly recommend Glyph as both an employer for PMs starting out on the vendor side of the industry, or for PMs who want to switch vendors. I will miss them all!

Cons

It won't be great for you if you don't like high expectations. Glyph's aim is to differentiate itself from its competitors on quality, and they are committed to that. You can't goof off! Also, for the moment, no matter where you are in the US, it works best if you stick to Pacific hours. That might be logistically awkward for some people.

Success Amplifies Dysfunction

Pros

The type of work that Glyph does is interesting and can provide an enjoyable challenge for those who enjoy language. Glyph provides flexible employee schedules, although some managers are inflexible with their reports' schedules. The company has done well at attracting a good group of employees who care about their jobs -- and each other. The company has provided good benefits, but has had to scale them back significantly in 2013.

Cons

At its very core Glyph is a dysfunctional company, and this is amplified when the company attempts to grow. Executive Management has little to no training in business management. They have been promoted from within and have been making it up as they go along. In the absence of education or proven experience, they apply their own personal approach to business planning, finances, employee relations and communication. Glyph has been in business for more than 10 years, and they haven't learned the skills or gotten past the mindset of a company in their first year of business. Because of the issues above, Glyph is plagued by... ...an inability to create and maintain a corporate identity, they are always chasing another opportunity without fully developing the ones they already have. They will fail at many things, instead of succeed with a few. ...an inability to forecast revenue with even the smallest certainty, create a budget from that forecast and manage spending. Money needs to be managed closely, and irresponsible spending should be dealt with severely. ...an inability to create and manage expectations for employees. Employee efforts are consistently wasted through poorly managed expectations or the superfluous creation of newer expectations (see corporate identity above). ...an inability to build trust and confidence within the company through effective communication. Integrity is important, charisma will only get you so far.
