Easy but slow-paced and strict

Pros

-Easy tasks like shelving and checking in books that don't require a lot of physical strength but keep you moving -Never gets too hectic -Patrons are usually nice and fun to help out -Easy tasks to get a hang of -Good pay for easy work -Co-workers are nice and friendly -Being able to browse books while you are on the job

Cons

-A lot of slow down time, for a 4hr shift, sometimes you will be sitting around doing nothing at all for 1-2 hrs -Despite the large amount of down time where there is nothing to do (no books to checkin or shelve, patrons to help), you are not allowed to read your own books, browse on the computers or use your phones, etc. at all -Very strict on protocols (dress code, phone usage, break times, proceedures to do things)

Pros

If you are a female or minority and have no ambition it is a steady place to work. For the environment the pay is good for a library worker in the upstate of South Carolina. You participate in the SC Retirement System but not any other state or county benefits.

Cons

If you show any signs of being able to think for yourself you will be ostracized - bullied by the current Executive Director. Only women are promoted to the senior levels of management in the GCLS. All senior males were eliminated in the director's second year of employment. You are supposed to have the same rights as Greenville County employees but the Executive Director does not follow that. The Executive Director reports to a quasi-government board appointed by the County Council. She is a puppet to two of the board members.
