    I worked at H.Samuel part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Only positive that came out of this was the experience I gained which I will take elsewhere and some of the friendships I have gained.

    Cons

There was always issues with hours in the store and there not being enough hours for everyone. There was also a lot of unnecessary bitchyness from the younger members of staff and management. You would find management and the other staff quite frequently huddled in the back office talking while you had a queue in the shop. Christmas temporary staff are made to feel very unwelcome, we were actually only employed for around 8 weeks and during that time we always felt like an ‘extra’.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate every member of staff that you employ even your Christmas temporary staff, you may just find that your ‘Christmas temps’ are doing a better job than your permanent staff. Sometimes a thank you can go a long way...

    I worked at H.Samuel part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - A respectable ~£7.20 wage for at the time a 16-year-old and a genuinely helpful and friendly team.
    - Each day is different and never boring.

    Cons

    - Over the Christmas period was forced to work over my agreed contracted hours
    - High turnover of staff meant that it was hard to maintain a high spirit
    - Understaffed during Christmas period

    I worked at H.Samuel part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some really nice customers come in, whom you are able to build a rapport with. Going through a sale of an engagement ring can be a nice rewarding experience.

    Cons

Bad management and high staff turnover, you know it's not great when the Supervisor even talks about how bad the manager can be! You have eyes burning in the back of your head every time you are serving a customer to ensure you go through 'The Perfect 10' steps to selling an item. Too robotic and structured meaning you are unable to add your own personality flair to selling. Not every customer needs to be asked what they are looking for today or what brings them into store, I hated feeling like I was pouncing on customers when they stepped through the door but that is what management wants. Also some really bad quality items which you have to defend at all costs!

    Advice to Management

    Happy employees = happy store

    I worked at H.Samuel part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked there part-time whilst I was studying so the hours I was given allowed me to easily balance both. I personally like working towards targets so that was good for me too.

    Cons

It can get quite competitive especially in the busy periods with people trying to exceed their targets. Opportunity for commission however that depends on the store and not your own personal sales

    I worked at H.Samuel full-time

    Pros

really good progression if you put the time and interest in. my manager was so lovely, the break times are really good as is the commission if you work together as a team. i went from part time sales to deputy manager within 5 months and it was my first ever job out of sixth form

    Cons

be aware of jealous colleagues who attempt to make your progression something to bully you about

    Advice to Management

be more like dan from wisbech if you arent already
