PLEASE STAY AWARE IF YOU ARE A WOMAN

Pros

No relevant for this warning.

Cons

I strongly advise any woman that they should not accept a job at HKA. The company has a serious problem with older men behaving sexually inappropriately towards younger women. There is no confidence in HR to sort this and it is often ignored.

My name is Kate Wood and I started as Chief People Officer for HKA in April 2020. I am very sad to read this April 2019 post on Glassdoor and despite the time difference, this post is important and deserves a reply. At HKA, if any complaint was made about anyone’s behaviour we would conduct an independent and thorough investigation. We would then review the findings and put in place any appropriate actions including development or, if appropriate, disciplinary action, including dismissal. We continue to make improvements regarding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within HKA. From my experience to date, HKA does employ brilliant women and brilliant men and together we continue to grow HKA while ensuring, regardless of any diversity characteristics, everyone has an equal opportunity and is treated with respect. If the person who posted this in April 2019 would like this matter investigated, please do contact me in confidence – here is my email address: katewood@hka.com

Pros

Very flexible position due to lack of sufficient oversight. If you want to do nothing for a week you could just tell people you were busy and it would never be checked.

Cons

Culture - very negative culture, no one enjoys working and it is a very profit driven environment. There is a real lack of respect for colleagues. Progression - in this role they said many things during the interview about progression which turned out to be untrue. There was no progression available and in fact the job was significantly more menial than advertised. Even when I approached management with suggestions of what could be improved I was simply told that I needed to bide my time (5 to 10 years) before gaining more responsibility. I think they struggle to understand the ambitious millennial mindset, Hierarchy - it is a very heirarchical organisation and often you will be very subordinate to people less qualified than yourself. Delegation is intensely downward and done in an uncooperative manner. Engineering Management - there are some very unpleasant characters in the management of this team. The billab,e time culture also seems to bring out the worst in people. Job Role - in the end the role was that of a secretary or PA to the most unpleasant and rude old men (consultants) who no one else wished to deal with in the company. Turnover rate for this role over the last year is roughly 50%. Those who remain are unanimously searching for jobs right now.

Thank you for posting on HKA's Glassdoor site. I note that you posted as a former employee back in October 2018. I am sorry that we are only now replying to your post. HKA is a continuous improvement organization and we recently decided that every post on HKA’s Glassdoor will be replied to. We do value different opinions and look to learn from them too. As you would expect me to say, HKA has evolved and improved much since October 2018. I respect that when you posted these were your views; notwithstanding that, I see HKA very differently to you. I joined HKA in April 2020 and therefore my opinion is based on the last 14 months. I am sorry that you do not feel you had a good experience in HKA. If you would ever like to connect with me to follow up on anything, you are most welcome. My email address is katewood@hka.com I know you will see my points below differently from your experience back in 2018 – today, June 2021, HKA: 1. is a great place to work. The culture is very collaborative, friendly, positive, respectful and we are passionate about clients, our people, and continuous improvement. Our people stay at HKA and enjoy working together as one team 2. delights in promoting our brilliant people. HKA is in growth mode so promotional opportunities are there as well as opportunities to join HKA 3. has a very high retention rate of our talented and diverse people, which is wonderful. In addition, our colleagues are referring in new people to join HKA 4. has a flat structure where sharing freely your opinions is encouraged. We know ideas come from everyone so we want to hear and listen to our colleagues 5. have a very strong Engineering Team. We have a super team who work well together there. We certainly do not tolerate any bad behaviour towards any colleagues. In my role as Chief People Officer, where my passion is our people, I would jump on anything inappropriate. Thank you again for posting. I trust you are well, particularly during this pandemic. Best regards Kate Wood Partner, Chief People Officer.

Thank you for sharing your view on HKA as you posted as former employee. Your post is important and deserves a reply; albeit we are slow to reply – sorry. I joined HKA a year after your post. I am HKA’s Chief People Officer and together with colleagues across the globe we are continuously improving HKA. Part of our continuous improvement journey now includes us reviewing every post on Glassdoor, as all opinions matter and we want to listen and learn and respect everyone by replying. I note you are a current employee in London and have been with us for over 5 years. I really hope you are still at HKA now; as I trust you will be feeling the positive improvements we are making. I know at the time you posted you felt we were “worried more about fees that staff” – I really hope during 2020 you have experienced the passion and priority we have for our brilliant people at HKA. Since I have been at HKA for over eight months I have seen tremendous passion, care and improvement action for our HKA employees. I have also observed that colleagues across the globe speak up with their opinions that are listened to, collaborate together to support and help each other. Our people are the difference that has taken HKA to an even better place. I joined during a lockdown pandemic in April 2020 and the care I have seen to protect and support health and wellbeing of our colleagues is huge and a first priority. We also asked all our colleagues globally if HKA was supporting them during this pandemic and the survey results that came back were extremely positive. Delighted that you felt HKA had “good pay, benefits, some good people”. I totally respect these are your views. I am really sorry you thought “if your face doesn’t fit your toast” – that really saddened me. Currently, I do know we are very focused on equality, diversity and inclusion. We do value different colleagues as we know that it is simply the right human approach while it also makes our business stronger. We continue to work hard to embed our ED&I actions. Thank you so much for posting your views. Fingers crossed you feel we have improved since you posted in May 2019. Always feel free to contact me directly in HKA. Thanks. Do keep well. Kate Wood, Chief People Officer
