I have been working at HM Prison Service full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The shift pattern isn’t too bad. Sometimes you will have 10 days on, followed by 4 days off which is usually Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Overtime is always available and paid at double. This is the reason most people join the service. Whilst you can take home £23,000 on basic salary. Officers can earn over £40,000 with overtime. I’ve found the service to be very supportive and helpful with personal issues.

    Cons

The cons. Training isn’t very good despite it being 2 months long. It is very generic and once you officially start you don’t get much support. I don’t think it’s a career anymore, the role carries a lot of responsibility compared to the money. There is obviously a lot of abuse at times involved. It is repetitive at times too. You’d also be surprised at how many rights offenders have.

I worked at HM Prison Service full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good colleagues on the whole who will get stuck in and support you. Good annual leave. Promotion is available

    Cons

At HMP Brixton, management try and bully staff and often talk to them like they're idiots. It is an incredibly boring job with very little responsibility. You are essentially unlocking and locking doors. No sideways moves. Whilst majority of staff are good, there is still a fair amount of corruption. Shift pattern is horrendous. Training is pathetic. Exceptionally high turnover of staff. Graduate scheme is not a graduate scheme.
