The Most TOXIC Job You'll Ever Have

Pros

Some of your coworkers might know what they're doing, but good luck getting them to do their fair share of the workload.

Cons

The workload in all departments is obscene. Every department needs more workers, but there are THREE owners who want to share in the profits, so you do the math. They also received a fully forgiven PPP loan of over $1 million (it's public information, so do your due diligence), while telling the majority of employees there was no money for annual raises and the few who did receive raises got 1% raises - and told to be thankful for that. You will be pressured to work constant overtime if you're a good worker, but allowed to slack if you're a favorite pet. This is rampant in all departments. You will also be extremely underpaid for the market - $20-30k/year underpaid. Turnover is very, very high especially for a professional organization. Almost all of the senior leadership has been at this company their entire adult careers. Most are completely inept at managing teams and are such micro-managers, they fear any sort of change. If you are a seasoned professional, run. The reputation this company had is diminishing by the day and the company is ripe for asset stripping. If you are a new grad, know this is NOT how most professional companies are actually run and get out as soon as possible. Also make note of my comment above, senior leadership is set. There is little to no room for advancement here. They'll give you a fancy new title, though, no raise, and numerous additional responsibilities. In addition to the pay being sub-standard, the benefits are not competitive and they are very expensive. This company thrives off it's previously good reputation and has been riding those coat tails for a few years now. That ride is going to end soon. Also note, the other reviews here that are positive are generally from senior management or from consultants who work at client sites - not in the HRWorks office.

Constant negative feedback

Pros

I expereienced no "Pros" in my time working for HR Works. My Pro was leaving the company.

Cons

You only receive negative feedback, rarely anything positive. I left an excellent, positive feedback job to join HR Works thinking they would be a good fit. The job that was described to me, was not that job that I was given to do. They claim to be a "family friendly" company but you will be reprimanded for taking time off to care for family. Employees are browbeaten into completing the Best Companies in NY survey to be positive. Management is not concerned with knowing the truth.

Disappointing

Pros

Ability to work from home. Kind and helpful coworkers.

Cons

The leave and benefits department is turning into a call center which is not how the department was initially marketed in the interview process. Leadership in the department changes every few months which is chaotic. The current department leadership has made comments to their employees that are disparaging, unprofessional, and hurtful, at times openly questioning their qualifications and character. Feedback is not welcomed on department or company wide changes unless it supports management's view. It feels like there will be retaliation if you are not tractable and agreeable. Many people on the team are overworked and chronically stressed out. The quality of work being provided to clients is poor due to the high workload given to each team member and it is disappointing to know that real people who are often dealing with health issues or family crises are being negatively affected by the services falling short. Multiple client complaints and compliance issues occurring leads to a "putting out fires" environment. The team members for the most part are very hardworking and helpful towards each other except for a few that are toxic and thrive off of negativity. Talented and promising employees are getting burnt out and leaving. Communication and training/onboarding are very disorganized which is made worse by the frequent turnover. Benefits are pricy, PTO is not great and you can't take it with you when you leave even if you work the notice period. The company says there is room for growth and internal mobility but these opportunities don't bear fruit. I was really hoping to enjoy working here because of the great things people have had to say about the company but this department just does not live up to it. It's a really disappointing environment especially in light of the company's good reputation in the community.
