    Pros

HPI is privately funded and this allows it to offer competitive scholarships and salaries, which attract great professors and in turn teaching assistants. This of course in turn brings some of the best students across Germany and allows it to have its current success.

    Cons

Students tend to overly-emphasize on practical approaches and frameworks, therefore, being more on the Engineering part and neglect to some extent theory, which makes them less of Computer Scientists. However, the set of skills they acquire is usually what the market really expects, making this negative point partially a positive. :)

    Pros

I like to work at HPI because of the friendly atmosphere that the colleagues foster. The colleagues are really helpful and cordial.

    Cons

There's no con as such except for the shorter 3 months contract period for student assistants. The contract needs to be renewed every three months, which is really stressful and annoying. Besides the payscale can be improved a bit.

    Pros

Good work environment, at least where I work. Very knowledgable colleagues.

    Cons

Sometimes people don't realize that you (as a student) may not have as fast a work rate as a PhD and give a lot of work because of that. However, naming limits helps and should be done.

Research tends to be more applied than theoretical/fundamental, which might not please everyone.

    Pros

The atmosphere is nice Flexible working hours Fair salary Opportunity to travel for conferences Balance between work and personal life The management staff is friendly Support innovation and trying new things Multi cultural environment Many programs with well know universities around the world

    Cons

I can not find any cons so far. You may consider going to industry if you are looking for a better income. Typical, academic jobs do not pay so much, but you get a nice experience and chance to learn from your peers, the seminars, and the weekly presentations.

    Great environment, very restrictive management.

    Pros

The HPI provides good contact to the industry and various opportunities for people who are interested in specializing in their respective field. The coworkers are all smart and helpful. Recognition among peers is widely common and there is none of the competition that can be found in other research facilities. There are many common events.

    Cons

Senior staff arrogant and pushy. Career advancement is only possible if one bows to the whims and wishes of superiors. Top to bottom communication is virtually non existent. Employees are oftentimes left to wonder about future progress. Career opportunities are also rarely within reach as time management is next to impossible. Employees are shuffled between tasks.

World class research in computer science!

    Pros

The HPI is part of the university of Potsdam but compared to other public universities its privately funded. This allows to world class researchers to settle. The curriculum is very much practical and industry oriented.

    Cons

The only downside of the HPI is that it's still comparably young compared to typical German elite universities und thus not everywhere equally well received.

Nice place to work at, research could be better.

    Pros

The Hasso-Plattner-Institute is well funded and has constant support by its founder. It is well equipment and always at the latest level of technology. The colleagues are nice for the most part and cooperative in sharing their knowledge. For students it is a great place to learn at.

    Cons

The management often surprises employees with decisions which were not anticipated. Also, research sometimes seems to stand back for other goals, such as publicity. The work of individual employees could be highlighted and supported more often.
