A "Mine Field" of Professional/Ethical Misconduct

Pros

Since the majority of the firm's staff is under 40 years of age, there is a strong collective work ethic stemming from the many talented, dedicated, energetic employees who genuinely want to do great work and push themselves to excel. Many nice people work there who try, despite the company's cut throat culture, to be supportive of their fellow coworkers and have developed true friendships with each other outside of the office. Decent benefits package, but nothing more than most good firms offer.

Cons

The company's leadership pride themselves on their mission statement of "Work hard. Play hard," which in practice translates to staff working hard and leadership playing hard. As other reviewers have noted, yes they do regularly throw some "well stocked," frat house style employee appreciation parties to which attendance is required, even if it means being subjected highly unprofessional, awkward situations and working extra hours to catch up on lost work time. Key partnership - a tight-knit clique of self-absorbed, arrogant middle-aged white males - for the most part seems oblivious to the glaring deficiencies in the firm's operations and management practices. Instead they are excessively preoccupied with acheiving firm growth goals through aimless, often fruitless, marketing/BD efforts involving copious amounts of "business" travel, during which time they are unresponsive to calls or emails, and miss important meetings. When they do respond or show up, they are often unprepared, but always willing to tell everyone else how things should have been done with no regard for the established project timetable, deadlines or the staff overtime hours it will take make the requested changes (that often result in a degraded solution). The firm recently experienced a mass exodus of employees from every department. The firm's high turnover of technical staff and inability to retain enough seasoned management level professionals is strongly apparent in how projects are regularly mismanaged and understaffed. Disgruntled staff, external partners and subconsultants complain often of leadership's incompetence to train and mentor young staff or to provide adequate attention to projects requiring the high level of skill promised to clients in the marketing phase. While there has been a steady stream of departures by disgruntled employees from all levels and departments, there has also been a clear pattern of leadership finding unsubstantiated grounds for letting go of longstanding, high performing middle-age employees, including women who are mysteriously replaced by younger women or by less qualified men. It is well known (and sadly accepted) among the employees that male employees are paid more than their female counterparts who are equally or more qualified. There is no legitimate system in place for documented performance reviews. Raises, bonuses and promotions are handed out arbitrarily on the whims of leadership alone, to accomplish unclear, hidden agendas. While favored, underperforming staff and cronies of leadership are not only retained, they are regularly rewarded with bogus promotions and perks not afforded to higher ranking, higher performing employees. The NEGATIVE REVIEWS OF THIS FIRM ARE NOT AN EXAGGERATION. The people who run this firm are essentially unethical, unprofessional and will stop at nothing to get what they want, be it lying, cheating and even falsifying information. They find no problem with the flagrant sexism, ageism and cronyism that goes on. HR has dozens of documented complaints, but don't count on HR to help. At this firm, just know that HR's primary role is to protect the firm and its partners, not the employees.

Pros

First the positives: Healthcare, insurance, matching 3% IRA contributions, summer hours. Very nice and hardworking younger staff who make the charitable events and Culture Club tick. I almost forgot, plenty of opportunities to drink and party if you like that kind of stuff (gotta give the younger staff a reason to stick around).

Cons

1. Large Corporate Healthcare in the 'burbs. Yes, there are commercial and judicial departments, but don't believe the hype. This is a healthcare firm first and foremost. The feel around the office is definitely that of a large corporate firm in the middle of a suburban concrete parking lot, not a medium-sized design firm somewhere vibrant. The corporate office culture is only going to get worse with even more small fiefdoms as the company tries to grow. 2. Design. If you think you are going to get ANY design experience please don't fool yourself. The "design pod" is the only group allowed to re-create the same design over and over again. Intern architects and PAs are just glorified Revit monkeys who do the real work of the firm. The PMs get to meet the clients, fill out the PIFs, kiss up to principals, and generally make themselves look busy when they are around. 3. FAKE positive reviews. I agree with one of the reviewers below- at least two of the positive mentions seem to have been written by the principals. Not surprised, since they keep lying to themselves about the amount of progress they are making. 4. Speaking of Management. in a word: Fractured. Each principal seems to be running in a different direction. Two of them seem aloof almost all the time, (think Mr. Bean). Not a very diverse group the KC principals: all white men except for the more progressive Dallas office. No women, no anything else. Also, I don't think any of the PMs on the architectural side (not counting the Interiors Dept) is a woman or person of color. 5. Lack of growth opportunities. If you are really talented and ambitious: Do not work here. That goes for all levels, but especially for Intern Architects and Project Architects. Intern Architects and Project Architects are really not cared for by the higher ups and the opportunity for promotion is practically none on both the commercial and healthcare side. The system at Hoefer Wysocki does not allow for growth; there are too many people ahead of you at the PM level, not all but definitely some who are quite frankly mediocre and not even that passionate about their job. They would rather play the long game by kissing up to management and keep Intern Architects and PAs in the dark, feeding an endless stream of redlines. 6. Final thoughts. Like I said, if you are really talented and ambitious: Do not work here.

Pros

The only pros of working at this firm are your colleagues and summer hours/pto benefits. All of the employees are in a terrible life sucking abyss together, so you learn to lean on each other - thus making wonderful connections. Somehow, this terrible firm with very little business acumen manages to recruit wonderful staff level employees. They are some of the best and brightest, but after they get a taste of HWA - they learn that the grass IS greener on the other side and they manage to escape. The firm offers a great summer hour program as well as decent PTO time for all of the days you will need off while you are looking for another job, or to use for mental health days because trust me, you're going to need them. Oh and if getting drunk and hanging out with the executives with your female colleagues in their swimming suits are your thing - then you will probably like this firm. They have an employee pool party at the CEO's private home, annually.

Cons

By far, the worst part of this firm is the executive level leadership. In fact, I am sure that the only positive review that is on this page was written by one of executives. Sadly, they have to make up lies about the firm and live in their own distorted reality because they are too egotistical to accept how awful it really is and how terrible they treat their employees. The only positive review about Hoefer Wysocki on Glassdoor states that they are experiencing "momentous growth" but what they failed to inform you of, is that they are also experiencing MOMENTOUS TURN-OVER due to unhappy employees. I have never worked anywhere in my entire career in which I have felt so under valued, and treated with such disrespect as here. Management is egotistical, controlling, and dishonest. They have absolutely no business acumen of any form, and work off of the crony system, here. If you are "in" with management, then you will get promoted, its not about how well you perform your job. The employees that have been with them the longest are kept so miserably busy on poorly managed projects they don't even have time to look for another job. You could work here for YEARS and never get promoted. Oh and as far as the mentoring program goes - its a complete joke. They do not listen to your professional criticism or advice nor do they care. If you go to HR about an issue it no results are taken nor is there a plan of action that is developed. They simply DO NOT CARE. PLEASE - STAY AWAY FROM THIS FIRM.
