Pros

Great place to be if you want to be a "lifer"--Good pay given the cost of living, good (but deteriorating) benefits, decent work-life balance. You can come in and do your job, stay there for the rest of your life, and if you don't mind never getting promoted, this is the place for you.

Cons

Quite a bit of incompetent management. Management is VERY risk-averse, even for issues not related to the electric grid. Limited career growth options. Complete lack of strategic direction both at the corporate and department levels. Huge amounts of beaurocracy: a lot of lifers who need the red-tape to keep their jobs. Some VERY bad managers and sr. managers despised by many but they never get removed because of a culture of tolerance for incompetence. There's no competition (for the company or, internally) and that in itself breeds an enviornment where A) it's hard to get ahead and B) there's no way to measure people.

Pros

Pay, benefits. To some extent, location.

Cons

Harassment, bullying, lack of respect are largely tolerated. No action or reaction to allegations on the part of HR, management, etc. Some might say that employees leave because of a bad boss. At this company, the reasons for turnover run deeper. To put this in perspective, as a manager I was severely harassed by a peer. Yelling, screaming, finger pointing, door slamming. I reported this directly to my supervision and to HR. Nothing was accomplished in doing this although that is the documented procedure. In fact, I directly asked HR to intervene for which they demurred. Stunned but not surprised, I was quick to exit the company after an otherwise long successful tenure. The harasser was promoted soon after.

ISO New England Response

At ISO New England, we take very seriously the well-being of all of our employees. As in any corporation, interpersonal issues occasionally occur and we address them promptly, though not necessarily in ways that would be transparent to the organization given the sometimes sensitive nature of these matters. GlassDoor provides a valuable forum for discussion, but the anonymity of the site makes it near impossible for us to fully speak to or understand the issues referred to here. Please reach out to someone that you trust in the organization to report your concerns.

Pros

There is scope for professional growth provided that you are not working for a fearful and insecure manager. Be prepared to work independently but also experience the burden of institutional lifers who do not care to develop new skills but are quite comfortable seeking a parasitic existence off of those who possess the ability to learn new things quickly.

Cons

Middle management unable to provide satisfactory guidance on assignments but expect to be spoon-fed by their direct reports which slows the professional development of the direct reports. There are too many superfluous leadership titles that deliver little for the compensation received.
