Horrible Place to Work

Pros

The only good thing about this place was that there was always parking.

Cons

Treating employees as if they are incompetent: The manager would sit behind me in the cubicle about a foot away and watch everything that I did for 8+ hours a day. This was mostly sorting emails in Microsoft Outlook, and she would critique how you sorted. For hours. Every day. As someone who had recently graduated from the University of Michigan with two degrees, I found this incredibly insulting. Micromanaging is not a good tactic. Rude upper management: When I was hired, I met the owner who looked me dead in the eyes and said, "I hate stupid people. If you're stupid, I don't want you working here." Micromanaging: When they finally start training you on how to format the booklets, a woman with a long wooden stick sits next to you and points out everything on the screen that you are doing incorrectly. And by incorrectly, I mean you use different shortcuts in InDesign. I have a degree in Art and Design--I think I know how to use the program. Again, this happens for hours.

Pros

Everyone seems really nice and they pay decently. The work is doable.

Cons

Lack of clarity or guidance sets you up for failure. Mixed messages and expectations create a confusion that is enhanced by the fact that they don’t have a set system to train new employees. Being encouraged and reassured along the way and then blind-sided before the two weeks of training is even done. They claim to know very well the type of person they’re looking for, but what they do after that is a mystery to everyone.
